Singapore has a nail biting race finish with just 44 miles to go 28-09-2011

It has become a nail biting finish for Singapore, as I write she has overcome the wind ‘hole’ and is sprinting to the finish just 44 miles away but her lead over ‘Yorkshire’ has halved and halved again and Yorkshire is still closing fast. There is just 17 miles between them with 3 other boats within 25 miles. It should be enough but…..then this is sailing! Here is the log from a couple of days ago before they came to a stop!

Hello All

Sherlyn has made a video of the broach, The Surf and the “mahusive” wave
(me also helming) with some commentary from Graeme and Luke which even now
may be up on the website.  It’s very good.

We are beam reaching at about 10kts towards Cape Town heading due east.
We’re hoping to get to the westerlies before they go so we can get the
kite up and speed up: if we don’t, the prospects of a good place become
less likely as does a reasonable downtime in CT.

Morale is better having got the boat a bit drier in the last couple of
days.  I enjoyed Darkness on the Edge of Town (three times) through the
boat hi-fi last evening – pretty surreal sailing through the South
Atlantic keeping to a compass course of 090+/- 5 degrees as the sun sets -
one of those magic moments we do this for!  I hope the others liked it
too.  But it’s still pretty wet and there is enough water coming over the
deck to stop us having the hatches open.

There is lots of bird life but no whales etc.  Albatrosses abound, happily
all very alive, as do shearwaters.

Not much else to report: I can absolutely vouch for Sherlyn’s diary
comment that five headsail changes in a day is indeed absolutely
knackering.  But it does, or will, make you stronger!

Thank you for all your support
